Green Tea White Chocolate Brownies

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love holidays. Even better when you can celebrate a holiday with special food. For this St. Patrick's Day, I decided to take a less traditional route. I initially tried to bake something chock-full of Lucky Charms marshmallows, but that didn't really go as planned. Bummer. So instead, I made a trip to the local Asian market and purchased some matcha green tea powder. Anything green is festive enough in my eyes — right?

I have been itching to experiment with Green Tea White Chocolate Brownies for weeks now. Even as I was mixing the batter, I was weary of how they wold turn out. No worries, though — these were AMAZING. (Yes, all-caps and bold amazing)

These brownies are fudgy, yet totally refreshing. I'll admit, the first bite is kind of strange, not totally what I was expecting. One more bite — damn I can get into that. The chunks of white chocolate are a perfectly rich compliment to the light matcha flavor. Get into it.

Everybody that tried these was in love. I'm not exaggerating, I was actually apprehensive of sharing the recipe I concocted. Consider this a present. :)

Green Tea White Chocolate Brownies

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter
  • 4 ounces quality white chocolate
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons matcha powder
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup white chocolate chunks

Preheat oven to 325 F. Grease and flour an 8x8 baking dish.

Over a double broiler, melt butter and white chocolate and whisk until combined. Mix in sugar and matcha powder. Add the eggs and vanilla. Whisk in the flour until just combined. Fold in white chocolate chunks and pour into prepared pan.

Bake for 45-50 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the brownies comes out clean. Cool and dust with confectioners' sugar.
